Mid Sussex is three towns and a lot of countryside between the Downs and the Surrey border. Haywards Heath grew up around the railway, Burgess Hill grew faster and more recently, and East Grinstead sits away to the north east with an older high street. Around them are Hassocks, Hurstpierpoint, Lindfield, Cuckfield, Ardingly and the villages of the Weald.

Mid Sussex District Council decides planning, bins, car parks and licensing; West Sussex County Council runs the roads and the schools; and inside the South Downs National Park boundary the park authority is the planning authority instead.   • Mid Sussex planning: the inspector has pushed the housing requirement from 19,620 homes to 24,071 and added 35 sites. The consultation closes at 23:59 on 7 September 2026.
  • House prices by ward: the district average is £430,711, and ward medians run from £240,000 in East Grinstead Town to £625,000 around Cuckfield. One of those numbers is misleading, and we explain why.
  • Trains to London: Haywards Heath is 43 minutes from Victoria, East Grinstead is 56, and the season ticket from East Grinstead costs £2,300 a year less.
  • Roadworks and parking: 87 county highway schemes in the district this year, 17 not yet started, and the short-stay tariff that adds £2.80 to an afternoon in town.
  • Things to do: the Bluebell Railway is diesel-only for now, East Grinstead Museum is free, and several admission prices go up on 2 September.
